Piriformis Paradox - TFL & Piriformis
Module descriptor.
In this presentation we will explore the misconceptions and overlooked truths about Piriformis and its antagonist, TFL. Understanding the typically dysfunction patterns in these small but influential pelvic muscles will enable you to quickly, safely and effectively target the cause of low back and hip pain and avoid chasing symptoms. We take a detailed approach to assessment, clear and simple treatment techniques to blend with your existing practice and demonstrate a range of individualised home care approaches based on clinical findings, to provide real change and lasting results.
Piriformis Paradox learning objectives:
• Students will be able to assess and differentiate between shortness and over-stretching in Piriformis
• Students will be able to devise a treatment plan and rehab to address hypertonicity or hypotonicity in Piriformis and Tensor Fascia Latae
Piriformis Paradox learning outcomes:
• Students will be able to define the term Paradox
• Students will be able to list the factors that can contribute to sciatica
• Students will be able to describe the role of Piriformis in stabilising the sacroiliac joint
• Students will be able to distinguish between form closure and force closure at the S.I. joint
• Students will be able to list the hip muscles most prone to shortness and neurological facilitation
• Students will be able to list the hip muscles most prone to overstitching and inhibition

More about Aubrey Gowing
Aubrey is a college director at Holistic College Dublin, and program developer for our cutting edge Sports Massage course and C.P.D. workshops. His 30 years clinical experience and 26 years teaching experience, enables him to bring high standards of professionalism and expertise to each diploma course and seminar. His qualifications include: Diplomas in Holistic Massage, Yoga Teaching, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Healing Therapy, Indian Head Massage, Seated On-Site Massage, Stone Therapy, Pregnancy Massage, Fitness Instruction and Personal training, Therapeutic Massage, Sports Massage levels 3,4 & 5, Orthopaedic Massage, Myoskeletal Therapy, Neuro-Structural Integration and certificates in Delivering Learning and Occupational First Aid. Aubrey has a particular interest in the pain free treatment of over-use, repetitive strain and chronic injuries and details this approach in his book - 'Myoskeletal and Sports Therapy'. In addition to his busy international lecturing schedule, he is also the current President of the Irish Massage Therapists Association. Aubrey is also a registered I.T.E.C instructor, and is on the national register of trainers with FAS/ Enterprise Ireland.

Her qualifications include; Diplomas in Holistic Massage, Yoga Teaching, Healing Therapy, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Beauty Therapy, Fitness Instruction & Personal Training, Remedial and Sports Massage, Indian Head Massage, Seated On-Site Massage, Pilates Instructor, Dr Vodder’s Manual Lymph Drainage (all levels) and a Higher Diploma in Neuromuscular Therapy. Prenatal (Pregnancy) and Post Partum Massage, Stone Therapy and City & Guilds Certificate and Diploma in Delivering Learning and Occupational First Aid. Alison is also a registered I.T.E.C instructor, and is on the national register of trainers with FAS/ Enterprise Ireland.
